Girls grapplers aim for state
HUNTLEY — Led by returning IHSA Girls State Wrestling runner-up Janiah Slaughter and third-place winner Aubrie Rohrbacher, hopes are high for Huntley in the early going this season.
Slaughter last season at 105 pounds, had a 29-3 final record, and advanced to the IHSA state championship final before a close loss. Slaughter, who was third at state as a freshman, expects to wrestle at 110 pounds this year.
Rohrbacher had a daunting task of five matches at state and was 4-1 at 130 pounds and brought home a third place medal. Rohrbacher won a regional title and finished runner-up at sectional to qualify for state. She also plays lacrosse for the Red Raiders.
“Rohrbacher returned to a third place match where she beat the wrestler she lost to earlier. Both Slaughter and Rohrbacher are working for state titles this year and I look forward to watching them both compete,” second year head coach Gannon Kosowski said.
Grecia Garcia, 135, gained experience as a sectional qualifier last season. She was one of three wrestlers who lost in the “blood round” at sectional, the round before state qualifying.
The team was 11-3 in duals, won the FVC, then concluded sixth in team standings at state last season.
“The start of the season is going well,” Kosowski said. “We have had some high intensity practices.”
