Darragh leads Red Raiders’ inside game
HUNTLEY — As back to back Fox Valley Conference foes discovered, Huntley’s Logan Darragh is a player who can lead a close-in attack to the basket.
Darragh scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds in a double-double game in the Red Raiders’ 59-48 win at Crystal Lake Central Dec. 13. This followed a 12 points outing against Jacobs.
“Darragh has been super important for us,” HHS coach Collin Kalamatas said. “He has great vision, is unselfish and difficult to guard.”
A scout from an Arkansas college was on hand to watch Darragh, who is 6-foot, 7-inches, play against the Tigers. Darragh has been playing hoops since age 7. He admires Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“Our motto this year is ‘trust the process.’ I see my role as more of a facilitator,” Darragh said.
Seniors Christian Wilson and Sheldon Aninagyei Bonsu are the returning players with the most experience but teammates are gaining skills.
“The guys were on the team last season, but they had not played much,” Kalamatas said. “We were inconsistent in our play due to the inexperience. They are now feeling more confident in their roles.”
Huntley started the season 0-4 at the tough Palatine Thanksgiving Tournament, but stood at 3-6 heading into the DeKalb Christmas Tournament.
Win over CLC
The host Tigers had the atmosphere and five three-pointers in the first half, and a 30-26 halftime lead, but zero treys in the second half. Huntley turned the tide with a 27-10 run.
In addition to Darragh’s 16 points, senior Will Dillon had 13 points and seven rebounds. Wilson added 10 points.
“Darragh was great,” Kalamatas said of the Friday win. “They were making three-pointers, but we then played tighter defense. We also limited them to one shot possessions.”
Loss to Jacobs
The Red Raiders hosted Jacobs but fell 59-48 Dec. 11. Aninagyei Bonsu led HHS with 15 points, while Dillon had 14 and Darragh 12.
DeKalb Tournament
Huntley’s first game at DeKalb is against Manley at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 26. The tournament runs through Dec. 28.
