Red Raiders girls hoops close to FVC goal
HUNTLEY — Huntley aims to wrap up a Fox Valley Conference championship with one road and three home contests remaining in the regular season.
The Red Raiders reached 27-0 overall, 14-0 FVC record with a 64-28 triumph at Crystal Lake South Feb. 5. Upcoming games to end the regular season: Huntley hosts McHenry Feb. 10 for senior night, Prairie Ridge Feb. 12 and Dundee-Crown Feb. 14.
Four Red Raiders had double digit scoring in the win over Crystal Lake South. Aubrina Adamik led with 15 points. Paula Strzelecki tallied 14 points, Anna Campanelli pitched in 13 and soph Alyssa Borzych had 10.
“Borzych did a great job,” Huntley coach Steve Raethz said. “She comes in and gives us a big lift offensively and this being her second year on varsity, has improved her defense. I thought Adamik also had a good game shooting the ball.”
Seniors who will be honored on Monday are: Campanelli, Strzelecki, Ava McFadden, Madison Diaz and Isabella Boskey.
Recent wins included turning back a Crystal Lake Central squad that had been playing well, entering the game on a 10-game win streak. The Red Raiders cruised to a 63-26 win Feb. 3.
“Our defense was solid,” Raethz said. “We did a great job of tightening the defense after allowing 14 first quarter points. We allowed only 14 points the rest of the way and we were able to extend the lead. I thought Campanelli had a great first half and the overall effort we had.”
Campanelli matched her season average with the 19 points. Campanelli, a 1,000-points career scorer, has committed to attend Kent State University. Strzelecki, who tallied eight against the Tigers, scores 12 points per game and eight rebounds per game clip.
Against CLC, McFadden contributed nine points on a trio of 3-pointers and Lana Hobday and Luca Garlin added eight points each.
Long range display
A strong 3-point shots game from paced Huntley to a quarter century of victories, with another lopsided FVC 66-18 verdict over Jacobs Jan. 31.
The Red Raiders swished 10 triples. Adamik had a trio of the treys for 17 points, while Garlin added two in her 10 points, Campanelli, who scored 13 points had one as did Strzelecki, who tallied nine. Freshman Evelyn Freundt finished off the long distance shooting clinic with two to tally eight points.
Adamik, a junior, began her hoops career back in Huntley Park District games on weekends, then moving on to feeder programs. She is also a standout softball player.
“I owe all my success to my teammates,” Adamik said. “We work well as a unit – it’s a special group.”
Adamik, a guard, isn’t afraid to go inside from time to time.
“We all have to go in and box out the opposition, because you never know where the rebound will be,” Adamik said.
Win over Hampshire
It was more of an inside attack against the Whip-Purs, for a 51-23 verdict on the road Jan. 29.
Strzelecki reached 21 points on seven field goals, one 3-pointer and four free throws. Campanelli added 11 points.
College update
McHenry County College freshman Cassidy Serpe, a Huntley alumna, scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds in a close 86-82 loss to Waubonsee Jan 30. It came after a 70-68 thriller win over Waubonsee Jan. 22. MCC had a 7-0 run to end that game. The Scots record was 9-14.
