Red Raiders girls keep reign in FVC going
HUNTLEY — It was a milestone night on more than one front for Huntley’s girls basketball team.
Huntley cruised past Prairie Ridge, 71-18, to capture the Fox Valley Conference championship Feb. 13 at their own gym. They had secured a share of the title a win earlier.
“It’s special to win the conference for the fourth straight season,” Red Raiders head coach Steve Raethz said. “Anna Campanelli became the first player in our history to win the FVC four years in a row. We’re 30-0, which ties our school record for wins and we can set a new record with a win over Dundee-Crown Feb. 14. “We work extremely hard in practice, on defense and we played an outstanding effort. We have had many players step up this season.”
Campanelli, a senior and leading scorer, finished with 17 points. The Kent State University commit, and 1,000 points career scorer, was assisted by several teammates scoring between five and 11 points. Senior Paula Strzelecki added 11 points, followed by Aubrina Adamik’s nine, Madison Diaz had eight, Isabella Boskey had six, Evelyn Freundt and Ava McFadden also pitched in five points.
“We were focused and came out with a lot of energy to win the conference title,” Campanelli said.
The formula was one that worked 16 times before, make that 17-0 now, with one game left in the FVC. Intense defense leads to high-percentage shots or patient offense. The winners made five 3-pointers and 17 twos against the Wolves (12-14, 8-8 FVC). Cary-Grove was runner-up at 15-2 FVC.
“It’s definitely a special group,” Adamik, a junior, said as teammates took turns posing for photos with the FVC trophy. “All of us are so close, we love playing basketball.”
Huntley will play in the Class 4A Rockford Jefferson regional next week, with its first game Feb. 17. The regional final is Feb. 20.
