Boys wrestlers to state
HUNTLEY — A talented trio of wrestlers – Radic Dvorak, Colin Abordo and Wyatt Theobald, whose dedication has led to a combined 113 wins this season, all qualified for the IHSA Class 3A Individual State Tournament.
Dvorak won the Barrington sectional title at 157 pounds, while Colin Abordo took fourth at 113 as did Wyatt Theobald at 215. Following their strong showings Feb. 15 at Barrington, it is on to the University of Illinois State Farm Center Feb. 20-22.
Dvorak is a repeat state qualifier, who was fourth at sectional last year and 1-2 at state. He reached a 42-3 record with three wins, two by major decisions and one by fall.
“I try to work on a few moves this time of year, just sticking to certain things I do well, not to try and be perfect at a lot of things,” Dvorak said.
Dvorak’s title came when he won by major decision, in a quick 11-0 victory over Frank Tagoe of Hersey. Dvorak, a sophomore, started fast in his wrestling career with two state titles in seventh and eighth grade.
“Dvorak beings stability, he only gave up one takedown all sectional,” Huntley head coach BJ Bertelsman said. “He is more of a leader by example.”
For Colin Abordo and Theobald, they had to win third round consolations to reach the third place round (the “blood round”) and qualify for the top four and a state trip.
Colin Abordo, 38-11 record, won by fall over Deegan Kirsche of Hampshire in 1:31 to advance to state. For third place, he fell to a wrestler with an interesting background, Oleksandr Havylkiv of Buffalo Grove Hersey, who is from the Ukraine. Abordo finished fourth by a third period fall.
“I just trusted my training,” Colin Abordo, a sophomore, said. “The ‘blood round’ has a lot of pressure because if you lose, you go hime but if you win, you go to state, so I was a little nervous.”
Colin Abordo, who also plays lacrosse, credits work at ISI Club in Elgin for his season.
Wyatt Theobald, a senior, was first congratulated by his brother Waylon, the 175 pounder who was injured late this season.
In the third round, for advancing to state, Wyatt Theobald built a 10-3 lead on Lucas Retzler of Jacobs and held on for a 10-4 decision. The win came after Kai Calcutt of Loyola Acaddemy, ranked No. 1 in Illinois and a top wrestler nationally, beat Wyatt Theobald, 19-4.
“Wyatt Theobald was awesome,” Bertelsman said. “He comes in every day and puts in the hard work.”
“This (qualifying for state) is what I’ve worked the whole year for,” Wyatt Theobald said.
The trio was part of 12-wrestler contingent which represented the Red Raiders at sectional. Huntley finished runner-up at the Hononegah regional the week before. Regional champions were Colin Abordo, 113 pounds; Matt Keaty, 144; Dvorak, 157 and Wyatt Theobald, 215.
