Rohrbacher, Aguirre make state wrestling
HUNTLEY — Two Huntley girls wrestlers, Aubrie Rohrbacher at 130 pounds and Natalie Aguirre, at 170 pounds, have advanced to the IHSA State Girls Individual finals.
Rohrbacher was second at the Schaumburg Sectional Feb. 15 while Aguirre ended in fourth place. The State Finals will take place Feb. 28 and March 1 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Rohrbacher brings a 43-8 record to state. At sectional, she advanced to the state tournament with three wins in four matches. She fell to Sophia Ball of Hoffman Estates in the championship, by fall in 2:28.
Aguirre is 38-14 heading to state. Her sectional included a second round win in sudden victory, 3-0, over Alya Razzak of Schaumburg. She lost her next round, to drop to the consolation bracket. A win over Emma Abbate of Batavia in a close 5-3 victory advanced Aguirre to the third place bout. She fell to Hoffman Estates’ Isabella Chiovari, in a 9-1 major decision.
Both commented on their achievements as prep work continued.
“Wrestling against high level opponents is a big advantage,” Rohrbacher said. “I’ve been working on shooting offense this year and confidence.”
“I’ve been working on my confidence,” Aguirre said.
Both are relatively new to the sport. Rohrbacher placed third last year at state as a sophomore, her second season on the mat. She also is a standout lacrosse player. Aguirre began on the mat sophomore season.
“Just staying positive and have confidence,” Huntley coach Gannon Kosowski said of the two. “This time of year, we’re taking it one match at a time.”
Huntley had won its regional title at Hampshire. A look at how the other sectional qualifiers fared:
At 190 pounds, Brianna Felde had a 1-2 sectional and finished with a 29-17 record.
At 135, Grecia Garcia had a 3-2 sectional round, and ended 36-13.
