LAKE IN THE HILLS – On Thursday Sep. 9, police officers and several community members were honored at the Lake in the Hills Village Board meeting for saving the life of a child that was found unresponsive in a pond during an incident that occurred on July 23, according to a Sep. 10 press release.
Several news outlets reported that at approximately 12:35 p.m. on July 23, police officers responded to a home in the 0-100 block of Point O Woods Court for the report of a missing child.
As the search for the child commenced, golfers at the nearby Boulder Ridge Country Club identified an unresponsive boy in a pond. The individuals pulled the boy out and proceeded to perform CPR.
The child was transported to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital and later flown to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
It was this quick response that saved the life of the child, leading to elected officials recognizing Detective John Arient, Officer Christina Busby, and Officer James Recchia for their rapid response to the scene and “their prompt actions in providing CPR to the child,” the press release stated.
The police department also recognized and honored community members Patrick Kalamatas, Steven Green, Matthew Horist and Mark Kroencke for their “selfless acts of bravery and fast response in locating the child in the pond and starting CPR.”
The Lake in the Hills Police Department awarded the four individuals with the department’s “Award for Saving Human Life” and credits them with saving the life of the boy.
Additionally, the police department awarded Sergeant Don Fowler alongside his team, Officer Sean Feely, Officer Amanda Schmitt, Officer Louis Zenaty and Detective Andrew Klem with the “Unit Citation Award.”
The “Unit Citation Award” was given to the group of officers for their outstanding performance in managing a critical incident with the highest degree of professionalism and compassion on the day of the incident.
That award was also presented to Public Safety Telecommunicators Matthew Krows, Aschli Palczynski, Lisa Mattson, and Kathleen Menzel for their exceptional performance that day in providing key communications to all the first responders involved in the incident.
