Elgin 18-year-old charged with felony gun offenses concerning a shooting incident
ELGIN – On Jan. 23, Elgin Police officers responded to the 1300 block of Eagle Road at around 4:12 a.m. for a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located two subjects with injuries. One of the subjects was subsequently transported to an area hospital. The other subject, who was later identified as one of the offenders, had an injury that did not require medical treatment.
A couple of days following the incident, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced that 18-year-old Jesus Canales of Elgin was being charged with the following offenses:
Aggravated Battery with a firearm, a Class X felony; Armed Violence, a Class X felony; Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 1 felony; two counts of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 4 felony; Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a Class 4 felony; Unlawful Use of a Firearm without Firearm Owners Identification, a Class 4 felony; and Mob Action, a Class 4 felony.
In addition, Mosser charged four other offenders each with a Class 4 Mob Action felony for the shooting incident.
The other offenders included 19-year-old Jonathon Alonzo, 20-year-old Joselin de la Rosa, 19-year-old Isaiah Lafuente, and 19-year-old Illich Vara-Morales, all from Elgin.
Kane County prosecutors allege that in the early morning of Jan. 23, Alonzo, Canales, de la Rosa, LaFuente, and Vara-Morales met the victim at a residence on Eagle Road in Elgin following an argument.
The five offenders had intentions to fight the victim.
“During the fight, Canales fired a 9mm handgun twice into the ground, struck the victim in the face multiple times with the handgun, and then fired the handgun a third time, striking the victim in the abdomen,” said the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. “In addition, a bullet fragment ricocheted and struck one of the co-defendants.”
The victim remains hospitalized.
On Jan. 25, the five offenders appeared in Kane County bond court, where Kane County Judge Julia Yetter set Canales’ bail at $300,000, with 10% ($30,000) to apply for bond. Canales’ next court appearance is scheduled to take place on Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. in Courtroom 211 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Alonzo’s bail is $30,000 with 10% ($3,000) to apply for bond. His next court appearance is set for Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. also in Courtroom 211.
According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, de la Rosa’s bail was set at $10,000, however, she was released on her promise to appear in court on Feb. 18 at 9 a.m.
LaFuente’s bail is $30,000 with 10% ($3,000) to apply for bond, with his next court appearance taking place at the same date and time as Alonzo’s court hearing.
Vera-Morales’ bail was set at $7,500, though she was also released on her promise to appear at her next court appearance on Feb. 16.
“We appreciate the swift, thorough and professional work of the Elgin Police Department. The ability of Chief Ana Lalley’s team to investigate, gather evidence, and assure the safety of the public is to be commended,” said Mosser.
Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley was also grateful for her team of officers that assisted in the shooting investigation.
“When these alleged incidents occur, the men and women of the Elgin Police Department work tirelessly and tenaciously to ensure that arrests are made and cases are resolved quickly,” said Lalley. “These incidents will not be tolerated in our community, and we will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
