Recognizing American Diversity initiative at Huntley High School to celebrate black stories in honor of Black History Month
HUNTLEY – Huntley Community School District 158 (D158) announced that its Recognizing American Diversity (RAD) Committee will be returning to Huntley High School for a free community event called “Celebrating Black Stories: Narratives on Identity, Belonging and Community.”
The event will take place on Feb. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“Huntley 158’s RAD Committee represents a district-wide initiative based out of Huntley High School that seeks to recognize diversity in our schools and community through collaborative events and celebrations,” said Alex LeMoine, D158’s director of communications and public relations.
The RAD Committee is inviting all D158 students and families to participate in this month’s celebration, which will be held at Huntley High School (13719 Harmony Road, Huntley).
Guests will be able to enter through Door 10 on the east end of the building by the Field House.
Attendees can expect to be entertained with a performance by the Jesse White Tumblers, a team of male and female participants who showcase their tumbling abilities at various sporting events and other functions and have been featured in commercials, national television shows, and motion pictures.
The event will also feature music, a student panel, and guest speakers.
Guests will be able to purchase food provided by Victoria’s Sweets & Eats Catering, as well as have the opportunity to browse through the onsite book fair that will feature black authors.
RAD’s goals are to recognize, celebrate, and discover diverse perspectives and identities that have historically been underrepresented. They work from the assumption that everyone benefits and grows from knowing more about one another.
“We are so excited to be able to come together with the community to celebrate Black History Month and recognize the rich history that has been cultivated for generations,” said Huntley High School Principal Marcus Belin. “RAD is such a valuable district-wide initiative because it allows our students to connect with not only the Huntley 158 community, but the world around them.”
