HHS softball returns home for wins
HUNTLEY – A greeting committee of Red Raiders softball players gathered at home plate for teammate Zoe Doherty’s arrival.
The HHS senior just clubbed her first career home run over the center field fence at the Red Raiders’ diamond in a 16-0 four-inning takedown of Prairie Ridge April 12.
“It’s here and there,” Doherty said of her power. “I prepare all winter, spring and summer for the season. We faced some good caliber pitchers in the early going. Coach (Mark) Petryniec does a good job preparing us for conference.”
Doherty played left field this Tuesday league battle and she has also played shortstop for HHS. She will play softball at Cardinal Stritch, an NAIA school.
HHS shocked three PR hurlers, led also by Clara Hudgens’ three RBIs and one from Meghan Ryan and Ava McFadden and many walks.
Senior Jori Heard notched a no-hitter against the Wolves in the four-inning game and struck out seven. The lone PR base runner reached on an error.
The Red Raiders were 5-4 overall, 3-0 FVC to begin defense of their league crown.
“I was glad that we were able to be patient,” Petryniec said. “It was nice that Doherty hit her home run. I like our chances when Heard throws a no-hitter. Heard has been spectacular so far.”
HHS tallied 27 runs in home league wins as they had also trounced Burlington Central, 11-1, in six innings the day before. Heard notched 10 strikeouts in a one-hitter.
