Red Raiders soccer squad battles tough in FVC
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s girls soccer team fell to two Fox Valley Conference foes last week, to Jacobs 3-1 April 26 and to Cary-Grove, 2-0 April 28.
The Red Raiders recorded one win at the Prospect Invite in Mount Prospect with a 4-2 verdict over South Elgin April 23.
“The South Elgin game was the best we have played all season,” HHS coach Matt Lewandowski said.
The offense was clicking to beat the Storm as Maddie Cummings and Grace Helzer both had a goal and an assist. Gabi Farraj and Annalissa Stevens also scored while Ava Trudeau and Kaitlyn Guyer notched assists. Keeper Nova Rothlisberger made four saves.
But it was a different outcome in another match at the Prospect Invite, a 2-0 loss to Lake Zurich, and a Thursday clash with Cary-Grove.
“We’re in a slump,” Lewandowski said, “The effort is there, but we aren’t scoring goals and that is frustrating. Rothlisberger did a nice job but we did not do anything to help her at the other end,”
The visiting Trojan squad notched both goals in the final five minutes of each half. At Jacobs, Grace Helzer scored the HHS goal and Farraj had the assist. Lewandowski hopes Huntley, 6-6-1, 2-3 FVC will gain momentum prior to the regional tournament.
