East Dundee Fire District credits smoke detectors for saving the lives of residents during a house fire
EAST DUNDEE — In the early morning hours of May 17, the East Dundee Fire Protection District responded to a report of a structure fire in the 10 block of Johnson Street in East Dundee.
The first fire personnel arrived on the scene at approximately 3:34 a.m. and reported seeing heavy smoke from the rear and the roof of the residence.
The East Dundee Police Department also reported the presence of heavy smoke and possible flames inside the wall.
A crew that included 27 firefighters from the Carpentersville, West Dundee, Rutland-Dundee, and Algonquin Fire Departments pulled a hose line and began to extinguish the fire on the rear of the structure.
Additional firefighters went inside the burning structure to assist with the “fire attack, search for victims, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul,” according to the East Dundee Fire District.
Other fire crews stretched supply lines to a fire hydrant.
The fire was officially declared under control at 4:04 a.m., as fire crews continued to investigate activities afterward.
No civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of the fire; however, the home was left uninhabitable.
The East Dundee Fire Protection District estimates that the damage to the home totals to be near $30,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Thanks to their smoke alarms, the occupants were able to get out of their home safely,” said the East Dundee Fire Protection District in a Facebook post.
East Dundee’s fire protection district is an active member of the “Be Alarmed” smoke alarm installation program, which is a fire safety education and smoke alarm installation program administered cooperatively between the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM).
The program serves the community by distributing fire safety education materials and 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms to residents within the East Dundee Fire District free of cost.
Fire district personnel then deliver and install the alarms while also giving residents valuable safety tips.
