A Huntley first: Mullen fires a hole-in-one
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s Austin Mullen did not have to wait for one of golf’s top accomplishments, a hole-in-one. The sophomore made Red Raiders boys golf history with the achievement.
“I’ve only been golfing for a couple of years,” Mullen said. “I didn’t believe when they told me at first.”
HHS head boys golf coach Collin Kalamatas told My Huntley News this was the first hole-in-one in the boys program history.
The memorable shot came in a dual win over Jacobs Sept. 12 at Pinecrest Golf Club’s eighth hole, which is a par-three. His dad Mike is a long-time golfer.
“I’ve been playing golf for 30 years and haven’t had one,” Mike said. Dad Mike and mom Kathy learned of the ace quickly. “I found out on Twitter.”
Coach Kalamatas said Mullen used a wedge club.
“It was awesome,” the coach said. “I was a fairway away and I got a text m my assistant coach (Brian O’Neill) and heard some murmuring from parents. It’s the first ace in the seven years I’ve been varsity coach. It was a special moment for the sophomore. He is one of two sophomores we have on the team and played junior varsity last season.”
Kalamatas described how the hole played Monday.
“The pin was in front of the green,” the coach said. “There is a creek and two bunkers. He put it five feet in front of the green and it went backward 10 feet and spun in.”
The Red Raiders won the dual over the Golden Eagles, 163-171. Nate Elm and Brendan Busky led Huntley as they shot 39s in the Fox Valley Conference win. Sam Locascio carded a 42 and Mullen a 43, including the memorable shot.
Busky and Elm have been most consistent for their averages, in the high 30s or low 40s, Kalamatas said.
The next night at Pinecrest, HHS fell to Hampshire, 155-162 for a 3-4 league dual mark. Elm led the Red Raiders with an even par 36.
Cary-Grove Invite
Huntley tied for second place with Cary-Grove with a team score of 330 at Foxford Hills Sept. 10. Busky led the Red Raiders with a 78 score. Elm shot an 82, followed by Nooa Hakala and Mullen with 85s.
Huntley will compete at the Fox Valley Conference Tournament Sept. 22 at Randall Oaks Golf Club. The Class 4A regional is Sept. 28 at Pinecrest Golf Club and the sectional is Oct. 3 at Randall Oaks.
