HHS girls golf squad captures FVC tourney
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s girls golf team put together a solid day at the Fox Valley Conference tournament at Bull Valley Golf Club.
The Red Raiders came home with the tournament championship. McHenry won the conference trophy, due to a better dual match record.
“We’re a young team, having graduated 12 seniors the last couple of years but we’re peaking at the right time the last couple of weeks,” Huntley coach Ann Christiansen said.
HHS totaled 377 strokes to win by one shot over McHenry Sept. 21.
Christiansen said Maddie Sloan and Aubrey Dingbaum, continue to be team leaders. Sloan ended led with a 91 score while Dingbaum shot a 93. Kylie Szymczak shot a 94 followed by Abby Panier who shot a 99.
Sloan is known for her white visor she wears each match. The LPGA professionals’ signatures had additional autographs.
“My teammates signed it before the tournament, sort of to relieve the nerves and have fun,” Sloan said. “I got the LPGA signatures at a tournament in Virginia. I’ve been playing golf for three and a half to four years. This season has had its ups and downs but we came up at the end and pulled through.”
The two leaders said the younger teammates have been improving all season.
Christiansen said the effort at the conference tournament gives momentum for the IHSA Regional Sept. 29 at Timber Point Golf Club in Popular Grove. The qualifiers will advance to the sectional meet Oct. 3 at Pinecrest Golf Club.
