
Girls runners capture crown at Peoria meet
Huntley’s girls cross country team outraced 22 teams at the Peoria Invite to capture the Red Raiders’ first team title there.
HHS totaled 82 points in the Oct. 1 girls race and the boys gained sixth place at the Detweiller Park, which is also the girls and boys state cross country meet course on Nov. 5.
“I’m really pleased with the performances from our teams at Peoria,” Huntley cross country coach Matt Kaplan said. “Our girls team set a goal of finishing in the top three and went out and ran amazing. This was the first time HHS girls have won the team title.”
“Participating in one of the Peoria meets helps us prepare for the state meet weekend,” Kaplan said.
HHS girls in the top 10 were: Breanna Burak ended runner-up with a time of 17:11.20; Brittney Burak was fifth with a time of 17:19.78 and Molly Allen was eighth in 17:09.55. Also contributing were: 32. Guillermina Gimenez Canet, 18:58.0; 37. Ava Allison, 19:10.97; 38. Gabriella Sweeney, 19:11.89 and 52. Aspen Malonado, 19:44.80.
“On the boys side, we we has personal bests from everyone,” Kaplan said. “Finishing sixth as a team against some great competition shows the group is moving in the right direction. Ty Rasmussen, stepped up and finished in the top 30 while running a new personal best on the state course by over 1:30.”
The Huntley boys team score of 240 placed the Red Raiders sixth of 36 teams. Tommy Nitz turned in the top Huntley boys placement of 10th, 15:02.64. Rasmussen ended 29th, 19:25.85. Also placing were: 52. Zachary Zuzzio, 15:47.80 and 86. Hudson Fisher, 16:04.21.
Huntley will compete at the Fox Valley Conference meet at Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake Oct. 15. The Class 3A sectional meets will be Oct. 28 at Lake Park in Roselle followed by the state meets Nov. 5 in Peoria.
