Kane County Sheriff’s Office arrests man armed with a weapon at the Kane County Judicial Center
CHARLES — On Feb. 1 at approximately 9:21 a.m., the Kane County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Kane County Public Defender’s Office at the Kane County Judicial Center located at 37W777 IL-38 in St. Charles Township.
Authorities were called regarding a man that was armed with a weapon. Upon arrival at the scene, sheriff’s officers noticed that the man was holding a pair of scissors to his throat and was threatening to harm himself.
Officers attempted to use de-escalation tactics with the man, however, those proved to be unsuccessful. Subsequently, law enforcement resorted to giving the male suspect several commands to drop the scissors.
The man, later identified as 20-year-old Daeshawn J. Clemons of Batavia, did not comply with officers’ commands.
Ultimately, due to the safety of all staff present and officers involved, authorities decided to tase Clemons, which allowed them to take him into custody.
Medical attention was rendered to Clemons on the scene. He was then taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva to treat his non-life-threatening injuries.
There were no reported injuries to either courthouse staff members or responding officers as a result of the incident.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office stated that during the investigation, it was found that Clemons had been at the Kane County Public Defender’s Office for a scheduled court appearance.
It was there that Clemons discovered that he had an active warrant for his arrest from the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).
Clemons allegedly became distraught, causing him to grab a pair of scissors from a nearby desk, which led him to threaten to harm himself.
The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Clemons with one count of knife weapon possession with intent to use in specific locations, a Class 4 felony; one count of carrying or possessing a weapon in a government building, a Class A misdemeanor; one count of disorderly conduct and breaching the peace, a Class C misdemeanor; and one count of reckless conduct, a Class A misdemeanor.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the St. Charles Police Department, the Campton Hills Police Department, and the Fox River and Countryside Fire Department.
