Balanced results lead to meet title for girls track squad
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s girls track and field squad ventured for its initial competition at the Springfield Southeast’s meet and came home with a championship April 8 by a wide margin, seven event crowns and momentum for the coming Fox Valley Conference meet.
“The Springfield trip was a great experience for our team,” HHS girls track coach Jason Monson said. “It was a great opportunity to travel with a large varsity team and simulate the process of an overnight stay and competition, similar to the state meet. The girls performed fantastically.”
Huntley chalked up 184 team points to second-place Chicago Kenwood’s 96 in the large 16-team field.
“The competition was solid, with some Chicago schools also making the trip,” Monson said.
HHS titles came in the 4×8 and 4×1 relays, the 1600, 3200 meters in distance races, the discus and long and triple jumps.
Red Raider senior Ally Panzloff, a state qualifier last season, earned the discus title with a 34.96 meters throw. Sophomore Sienna Robertson ended second in 34.47.
“Panzloff and Robertson are excellent leaders and their throws coach Zack Borring is extremely crucial in putting them in leadership roles,” Monson said. “Our throws group is a really good group of girls who really bring out the best in each other and Panzloff and Robertson are a huge part of that culture.”
Senior Alex Johnson, the defending state champion, won the long jump in 5.66 meters, edging sophomore sister Dominique Johnson’s 5.35.
Alex Johnson also captured the triple jump title with an effort of 11.95 meters, while Dominique Johnson was runner-up, 11.79.
The Burak sisters split the crowns in the distance races. Senior Brittney Burak won two distance events, the 1600 meters in 5:14.57 while Breanna Burak won the 3200 meters in 20:49.71.
Relay winners included the 4×8 with Ava Allison, Aspen Maldonado, Cori Kilvinger and Kate Patel clocking a 10:28.07.
The quartet of Sophia Amin, Vicky Evtimov, K’Leigh Saenz and Alex Johnson prevailed in the 4×100 relay, 49.07 seconds, edging East St. Louis by one second.
Upcoming meets include hosting Hampshire and Crystal Lake South for senior night April 17. The FVC meet is at HHS May 5 as well as the IHSA Class 3A Sectional on May 10.
