Red Raiders Boys Volleyball Off to Impressive Start
HUNTLEY — Huntley High School’s boys volleyball team has had their best start in program history this spring, with a record of 6-5. These six wins tie the Red Raiders’ season high in the short history of the program.
This is the first year in Huntley history where every single varsity athlete on the boys volleyball team has experience in the sport, making a huge difference in the success of the program.
“I think it’s hard for any varsity coach to imagine having a lineup with 20 to 50 percent of the team having never played the sport before,” Head Coach Gerald Marchand said. “That’s made a huge difference, guys sticking with the program and understanding the system.”
This year, Huntley has defeated teams in their regional that they have struggled to beat in previous years. Coach Marchand gives all the credit to the talented group of guys they have in their program.
“Our first team ever, who never got a chance to compete in IHSA regionals, was a very talented group of soccer and basketball guys who figured it out, but by that time it was too late and then almost all of them graduated,” said Coach Marchand. “Now our athletic guys also have the experience to go with it and the result is pretty impressive.”
The Raiders are looking to accomplish a feat this year that has never been done before in Huntley boys volleyball history: win the regional championship.
“Our goal these last couple of years was always to win our first regional game in program history,” senior Jayden Bell said. “This year, our goal is to win the entire regional tournament and advance to sectionals.”
Winning regionals would be a huge step in the right direction for this young program, and their talent will only improve. The Marlowe Mustangs, Huntley’s middle school team, have started a boys volleyball team this year for the first time ever.
“We started a team at Marlowe this year too, so the days of having a bunch of varsity guys who have never played before are gone,” Coach Marchand said.
The Raiders look to improve on their success at home this Saturday, April 22, where they will play some of the best teams in the area at the Huntley tournament.
