Significant tornado damage reported in Elgin
ELGIN — On July 12, tornado sirens were activated at approximately 6:20 p.m. in the City of Elgin, as was the same with various other nearby towns impacted by last night’s heavy storms.
Shortly after Elgin’s tornado sirens went off, residents reported funnel cloud formations and an eventual tornado touchdown in the Edgewater (Del Webb) subdivision at Bowes and Randall Roads, according to Elgin’s Emergency Operations Center.
Elgin Police Department officers, alongside fire protection personnel, were dispatched to the area at 6:28 p.m.
19 homes in the vicinity of the 2800 block of Stoney Creek Drive were reportedly affected by the tornado. 10 homes sustained significant damage, and nine homes sustained cosmetic damage.
“A canvass of the area confirmed that all residents were accounted for and no injuries are being reported,” stated the Elgin Police Department.
Due to the amount of damage and debris in the area, the area was closed overnight with the Elgin Police Department and Kane County Sheriff personnel stationed onsite.
The Kane County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) assisted with relocating affected residents who were not able to make alternative housing arrangements.
According to Elgin City officials, the areas that suffered the most damage were all located south of South Street and west of McLean Boulevard.
Additionally, the College Green neighborhood was reported to have taken a fair amount of damage along a few streets. Mission Hills Drive, Balmoral Drive, Harbor Town Drive, and Annandale Drive all had broken and uprooted trees.
Officials also reported that the Columbine neighborhood had some damage. The neighborhoods west of Edgewater such as Waterford, Copper Springs, and the Shadow Hill neighborhoods sustained damage as well.
Road work crews worked throughout the night to clear all roads and driveways in the areas affected by the storm. City crews have been working to clear the brush from parkways this morning and are continuing to do so until all the brush is removed, said city officials.
