
Lions Club happy with fest turnout
HUNTLEY — Huntley Area Lions Club was thrilled with response to the initial Beer and Brats Fest at Sew Hop’d Brewery and Taproom Aug. 5. The 50-member club has been serving the Huntley area since 2001 with its motto, “We Serve.”
Pam Palmer and Pam White were co-chairman of the event. The day included food and drink and music performances including the Huntley Jazz Combo. Lion Jim Worten won the Culvers of Huntley custard eating contest.
All funds generated from this event will go back 100 % to organizations and individuals needing assistance that fall under the Lions Club’s main causes: sight and hearing needs; hunger; childhood cancer; diabetes awareness; environmental concerns; disaster relief and humanitarian needs.
Locally, the club awards three $1,000 scholarships to HHS students. Recipients for 2023 are: Emily Chong, Lyndsey Bajgrowicz and Taylor Trent. The funds are deposited to the college students attend.
The trio has already accomplished much with special projects. Chong developed a project focusing on “Heart Failure Causes, Diagnoses and Treatment Options.” She presented it to Silicon Valley executives and won second place in 2022. She has been accepted into the LECOM Early Acceptance program leading to an Osteopathic Physician career.
Bajgrowicz plans to major in Statistics – Actuarial Science at Northwestern University or Miami University with her skills in mathematics and problem solving. She has been involved with education and connecting with underprivileged individuals in Huntley. She is an active Leo Club member.
Trent is also active in the Leo Club activities and manages its active social media page. Trent will major in biology and neuroscience with the intent to go into a medicine specialty and become a doctor.
Lions Club’s local support goes to Grafton Township Food Pantry; Veterans Path to Hope; Home of the Sparrow; Horizons for the Blind and more.
