HHS backs pediatric cancer awareness
HUNTLEY — Huntley High School sophomore Madison Roberts took her spot as the Red Raiders JV dance team performed a halftime show Sept. 29.
The night was a special one for Roberts, who later enjoyed duties as an honorary team captain at the coin flip before the Huntley-Crystal Lake South varsity game. The night was in support of pediatric cancer and regional resource Cal’s Angels. Roberts’s condition of t-cell acute lymphoblastic Leukemia is in remission.
“It was amazing,” Roberts said of the festivities. “I was in the back row of the dance team and we did the two-step. I feel much better,” Roberts said.
Roberts, who is attending HHS every day this fall and is in treatment monthly at Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
“The entire school community has been supportive,” Madison’s mom, Laura said. Dad Steve and brother Jake and sister Kloe were on hand as well as Megan and Danielle Librandt.
September is pediatric cancer awareness month and the Huntley High School Gold Out Game “is in support of the thousands of children battling this horrific disease. Each year, 550 children in Chicagoland are diagnosed with pediatric cancer. These kids should be enjoying their childhood, rather than fighting for their lives. We honor all the children battling pediatric cancer by raising awareness of the gold ribbon,” according to the HHS announcement.
Cal’s Angels
Cal’s Angels Foundation, Inc., (a 501-C3)has raised $17.7 million since its inception in April 2007. It was named for Cal Sutter, a 12-year-old South Elgin baseball player, who was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.
“Even though Cal ultimately lost his battle with leukemia in August of 2006, the courage he displayed throughout his treatment inspired the start of Cal’s Angels Foundation. It is our mission to grant wishes, raise awareness and fund research to help kids fighting cancer. Your continued support helps us achieve our mission and we are grateful for everyone of you,” according to the Cal’s Angels web site.
