
Red Raiders close in on FVC crown
HUNTLEY — Huntley is getting close to another Fox Valley Conference volleyball title as the Red Raiders turned back second-place Prairie Ridge Oct. 3 by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and then Hampshire, 25-21, 25-13 on Oct. 5.
The Red Raiders will go for an outright FVC championship when they host Crystal Lake South Oct. 10.
Against PR, Laura Boberg tallied 18 assists, two kills and two digs. Morgan Jones pitched in six digs, four kills, one block and one ace.
In the win over the Whip-Purs, it was Jones leading with nine kills and eight digs; Laura Boberg tallied 23 assists, four digs and three kills; Lizzy Williams had eight kills and eight digs; Georgia Watson had five kills, eight digs and two aces and Mari Rodriquez led the back row with 11 digs.
Huntley Invite
The Red Raiders won back-to-back 2-1 matches to secure their own Huntley Invite championship Oct. 7 and reached 20 victories at 22-4.
Wins over Glenbrook South (GS) and rival McHenry gave them the 5-0 record for the title. In the semifinal against GS, Huntley won 25-19, 19-25 and 25-16. Against McHenry, who defeated Huntley in FVC play, the Red Raiders prevailed, after a 22-25 loss, 25-20, 25-18.
“Jones led in kills in the championship match,” HHS coach Karen Naymola said. “She was a great offensive threat on the outside and couldn’t be stopped. Watson also came up with some great kills for us. I have to credit our middles who did a really nice job blocking. Just a great over all team effort.”
In the final against the Warriors, Jones totaled 13 kills, two aces, nine serving points, and four digs. Watson contributed 10 kills, two blocks, four digs and one ace; Boberg had nine serving points and seven digs and Rodriquez led in digs with 11. Avery Gonzalez had three blocks while Jocyln Ehrling had two.
Volleyball fun
There was volleyball fun to be had for folks of various ages recently. Staff members joined in warm-ups before the Hampshire match. Middle school students from Heineman and Marlowe took the court with high school players wearing middle school uniforms.
Post-season
Huntley is the first seed in its Class 4A sub-sectional, the IHSA announced. Huntley will play the winner of eighth seed Rockford Jefferson and ninth seed Rockford East at East at 6 p.m., Oct. 24. Dundee-Crown, seeded fourth and seventh-seed Rockford Guilford will play the second match. Huntley will host its own sectional, Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 with the champ going to the Barrington super-sectional.
