Village of East Dundee police chief to retire after serving in law enforcement for 42 years
EAST DUNDEE — Chief of police for the Village of East Dundee, James Kruger, has announced his intention to retire from his position effective Dec. 1.
According to East Dundee village staff, Kruger retired as the chief of police for the Oak Brook Police Department back in December 2021 after serving for that department for 10 years. He was hired in his current role for the village back in February 2022.
He initially started his policing career at the Carpentersville Police Department back in 1984, where he rose through the ranks eventually becoming a commander.
Kruger’s first police chief position was at the Winfield Police Department, while simultaneously holding half-time roles at Judson University (1151 N State Street, Elgin). Those roles included becoming the founding director of the Criminal Justice Management program and serving as an adjunct professor.
Additionally, Kruger also held the position of chief of police for the Roselle Police Department from 2006 to 2011.
“We appreciate Chief Kruger’s excellent service to [the] East Dundee Police Department and the community at large,” said East Dundee Village President Jeff Lynam in a press release statement. “The Village and the Police Department are better than before because of his leadership.”
During his 42 years in law enforcement, and 19 as chief of police, Kruger has held a variety of external leadership positions, such as serving as the president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) and president of the DuPage County Police Chiefs Association.
He also served on the boards of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) and the Northeast Multi-Regional Training Mobile Team Unit number three.
Back in 2022, Kruger received the Police Chief of the Year award from the ILACP.
“I want to thank President Lynam and the Village Board for their support and confidence over these just short of two years,” said Kruger. “I have appreciated the opportunity to return to the Dundee Township community and serve the people of East Dundee as I wrap up my law enforcement career.”
In addition to his ILACP award, Kruger also was a key subject-matter-expert to elected officials in the negotiations of the SAFE-T Act criminal justice reform bill which was approved by the Illinois Legislature last year, stated village officials.
Village of East Dundee Deputy Chief Joshua Fourdyce will be the acting police chief once Kruger retires. Kruger will be recognized for his service to the community at the Nov. 20 Village of East Dundee Village Board meeting. The public is invited to attend.
