Doubles duo gains first round state win
HUNTLEY — A win at the Class 2A IHSA State Tennis Tournament was the highlight for the Huntley doubles team of Kate Burkey and Carlie Weishaar.
After a 6-2, 6-4 win over Batavia’s Erin Connelly and Addi Long, the Huntley could not gain a second win and finished 1-2 at Palatine High School. Naperville North’s Gabbie Lee and Brooke Coffman beat the Red Raiders 6-0, 6-0 in the winners bracket second round. Then in the consolation round, Peoria Richwoods’ Julia Wojtowicz and Olivia Reynolds, won 6-4, 6-2.
Head coach Barry Wells described the Red Raiders state tournament experience on Oct. 19.
“We started off very strong against Batavia and went up 3-0 quickly in the first set,” Wells said. “We had a 5-2 lead and were able to close out the set on a volley winner. The second set Batavia fought back and went up 2-1, but then we went on a run to go up 5-2. We got a little tight and had a hard time closing it out and they got to 5-4, but Burkey had some big serves and Weishaar ended them match on an overhead that hit the line.”
The second round was a formidable opponent in Naperville North’s Lee and Coffman.
“Naperville North finished top four in state last year so we knew that was going to be a tough match,” Wells said. “We lost 6-0, 6-0 but had some rallies with them and got to deuce several times. Against Peoria Richwoods we had an excellent start going up 4-2, but we couldn’t keep our momentum and ended up losing 6-4, 6-1.
Post-season highlights include that Burkey and Weishaar qualified for the state tournament with a second place finish at the Cary-Grove sectional. Singles player Gia Patel and Ari Patel and Julie Klockner in doubles also played at sectional. The team won the Fox Valley Conference for the fourth straight year, going unbeaten in dual matches.
