Huntley strives for playoff win
HUNTLEY — Huntley will play in its 20th IHSA Football Playoff game when the Red Raiders welcome their first round foe Niles West at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in a Class 8A match-up.
The visiting Wolves Niles West Wolves, a Central Suburban League member finished 6-3 in the regular season, 3-2 in league games.
“We are preparing for Niles West the same way as we would any opponent,” Huntley head coach Mike Naymola said. “They appear to have great team speed and are very aggressive defensively. They play fast and try to be physical, but I think we will be ready.”
HHS will be seeking that first round playoff victory after last season’s first round loss to Andrew, 28-18. Their last playoff win was in 2019-20 over Chicago Taft, 48-6.
Huntley was seeded eighth in Class 8A and Niles West was seeded 23rd.
“We are very proud of our guys for being about to accomplish back-to-back 8-1 seasons but our goal wasn’t that, our goal is to win in the playoffs. We need to take the next step as a program and we think we can do that this week. The game being Friday at 7 p.m., we are expecting a big crowd. Our student population and community has always shown op for us and I anticipate that continuing.”
Win over BC
Huntley achieved a second straight 8-1, 8-1 Fox Valley Conference regular season record after a hard fought 20-10 victory at Burlington Central on Oct. 20.
The Red Raiders’ fifth straight win secured runner-up status in the FVC standings, behind unbeaten Prairie Ridge. It also sent the Rockets (4-5, 4-5) home disappointed as they were seeking a fifth win for playoff eligibility.
It wasn’t an easy win for Huntley.
Quarterback Braylon Bower threw two touchdown passes, one a 32-yard touchdown pass to Omare Segarra for a 9-3 lead in the first half. Jake Witt caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Bower, his seventh of the season, for the final score. Bower threw for 114 yards total. Senior Haiden Janke finished the regular season with 1,102 yards rushing with 124 yards on Friday and one touchdown.
Defensively, two interceptions by senior defensive back Jack Laughlin helped keep the lead. Charlie Condon contributed eight solo tackles, four assists and one sack while Ryan Sweeney also had eight solos and two assisted tackles and Zach Rysavy added four solos and one tackle for loss.
“The BC game was physical,” Naymola said. “They were prepared and played well. It took everything we had to get a win, ultimately the two interceptions by Laughlin were important. Janke ran exceptionally hard in the second half to seal the deal.”
