
Volleyball squad reaches 7th heaven
HUNTLEY — The Red Raiders volleyball team earned a spot in its own Class 4A sectional tournament by winning the Rockford East Regional over Dundee-Crown. HHS gained its seventh straight regional crown.
Huntley, the sectional’s top seed, improved to 31-6 record as it beat Dundee-Crown, 25-12, 25-13 on Oct. 26. Huntley will face second-seed Warren Township, at the home sectional semifinal Oct. 30. Warren, seeded second for the sectional, won the Jacobs regional over the home team, 2-1, to advance.
A steady effort led the Red Raiders to the successful night at Rockford East.
Setter Laura Boberg directed the offense with 18 assists and added seven digs.
Morgan Jones contributed five kills, five aces, one block and one dig.
Lizzy Williams notched seven digs, three aces, two kills and one ace.
Also, Mari Rodriquez had six digs as did Alex Goritz and freshman Izzy Whitehouse pitched in three aces.
Huntley, which has won the Class 4A Sectional championship three straight years, has several different statistical leaders. Jones leads in kills with 260 while Williams is the top server with 67 aces; Avery Gonzalez, blocks, 56 and Mari Rodriquez, digs, 226.
The Blue Devils come into the sectional battle with a 24-10 record and downed Jacobs in three sets for the Jacobs Regional championship.
Warren downed Jacobs 25-22, 25-27 and 26-24. It finished third in the North Suburban Conference. Top players include Ruth Ziegler with 320 kills while setter Madison Wojdyla has 600 assists and 84 aces.
Sectional pairings
The Huntley Class 4A Sectional also features the 6 p.m. McHenry (21-15 record) and Rockton Hononegah (26-10) match before the Red Raiders and Blue Devils clash Oct. 30. Winners advance to the sectional final at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 and that winner qualifies for the Barrington Super-Sectional on Nov. 3.
