Girls hoops make early progress
HUNTLEY — A Huntley lineup including players new to varsity competition gained confidence in its season opening girls basketball tournament.
The Red Raiders completed a 2-2 Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament with a 60-22 thumping of South Elgin Nov. 21 following a 43-29 victory over St. Viator. They open the Fox Valley Conference slate at Cary-Grove (4-1 record) Nov. 28 to start defense of their FVC championship. HHS faces rival Hampshire (1-3) away Dec. 1.
Losses were to Boylan Catholic, 46-42 and Hononegah, 44-37. HHS head coach Steve Raethz commented on the first four games.
“Despite going 2-2 in the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament, I thought our team competed really well in all four games,” Raethz said. “We had two really solid tests to begin our season in games against Boylan Catholic and Hononegah. Although we lost both of those games, we had leads deep into the second half and I think our team will definitely learn and grow from those experiences despite the losses. With having 10 new players on our varsity, we are working hard to build cohesiveness and I think this group has it in them to improve and grow as the season progresses. I am pleased with getting two wins to finish the tournament and I thought we had a lot of solid contributions from different players in our wins against St. Viator and South Elgin.”
The Red Raiders were undefeated in FVC games last season but know this year will be new challenges, starting with the Trojans and Whip-Purs.
“This is a really coachable group and we are excited for conference play to begin this week,” Raethz said. “We have two tough opponents in games against Cary-Grove and Hampshire and we are looking forward to the challenge of competing and contending for a FVC title.”
