Wrestlers prepare for big FVC showdown
HUNTLEY — Both individually and for the team, it was a good return to the mats Dec. 30 at Huntley’s own New Year’s Mega Duals.
Two Huntley wrestlers, seniors Markos Mihalopoulos at 285 pounds and Shane McGuine at 150, reached 20 wins for the season.
McGuine has enjoyed a successful first half of the 2023-24 season, reaching a 20-6 record. Mihalopoulos, meanwhile, is 20-7.
McGuine had a close battle with Wheaton North’s LeVander Schoot as he pulled out a 10-7 victory from a 7-7 deadlock. McGuine finished 4-0 for the day.
“The year has gone well so far, it’s been fun,” McGuine said. “I had to really dig deep to beat Wheaton North’s guy. The offense was there – I had to guard against the cradle.”
HHS had a successful day overall with three wins in four team bouts. Huntley downed Mundelein Carmel 69-12, Morris 54-26 and Bolingbrook, 45-30 but lost to Wheaton North, 42-35. The Red Raiders’ dual records were 15-4 overall, 5-0 Fox Valley Conference.
McGuine, a team captain, is a long-time wrestler who plans to compete in college next fall. He has had a certain pre match routine for years.
“I have a certain playlist of music I listen to, and concentrate on what I need to do against the opponent,” McGuine said.
“McGuine had a couple of good wins,” Huntley Coach BJ Bertelsman said. “Freshman Gavin Nitschke at 132 looked good as did Matt Keaty at 138. The main thing is we have to get healthy as we had six guys out today. Some will come back after Jan. 1 and others soon after.”
The team is getting prepared to face key FVC duals to decide the regular season champs, against McHenry Jan. 11 away. McHenry is defending FVC champ. Also in the FVC, Huntley is at Dundee-Crown Jan. 18 and hosts Hampshire Jan. 24.
In addition to McGuine and Mihalopoulos, also reaching double digit victories were: sophomores Colin Abordo, 14-9, 106 and Cameron Abordo, 11-9, 113; freshman Radic Dvorak is 15-9 at 157 pounds; senior Alex Napientak, 16-7, 157; Nitschke, 15-6 at 132 and junior Wyatt Theobald, 15-12, 190.
