McHenry Public Schools introduce new safety tools for driving
HUNTLEY — A new program is being introduced to health and drivers ed teachers across McHenry public schools. After receiving a federal grant called the “drug free grant,” regional office superintendent Diana Hartmann purchased toolkits specifically for teachers to incorporate into their curriculum and create engaging activities for students to learn about drug use and distracted driving.
The toolkits, made by Innocorp Ltd., feature multiple items that students and teachers to use including goggles to simulate alcohol-impaired vision that can be used in multiple games to show the dangers of impaired driving, glasses that show how much alcohol is in different common cups, including beer mugs, martini glasses, and whiskey glasses.
Hartmann said that one of the best features of these toolkits is that they can be used over and over again, which would be the best use of the grant money.
“They can be used over and over and over again. And because I made such a big purchase with this company, we made a package deal. So we get all the professional development as well,” Hartmann said. This means that teachers will be trained to use the materials and able to fit it within their curriculum.
Another reason for the toolkits was to use them instead of bringing in a guest speaker like a sheriff. “That’s just somebody that you have to coordinate to come in. We want the teachers to do it. The teachers have the biggest relationship with [the students],” Hartmann said.
