
Five move on to State Special Olympics
Five Hurricanes D158 Special Olympics team members are have advanced to the Illinois Special Olympics State Competition.
First place finishes at the Illinois Special Olympics region meet qualified for state.
The state qualifiers with other medals won were:
Gabi Ford won first place finishes in the softball throw and the 50-meter dash.
Luis Martinez, first for softball throw, who was also sixth in the 100-meter dash;
Parker Goering, first place in softball throw, also second place in the 100-meter dash;
Chase Goering, first place in softball throw, also third place in the 100-meter dash and
Charlie Michelin, first place in softball throw, also fifth place in the 50-meter dash.
Also competing at regional, held at Prospect High School April 13-14, were: Matthew Erickson, who finished sixth place in the softball throw and third place in the 50-meter dash; Isaac Pacheco finished third place in the softball throw and fifth place in the 100-meter dash and Jaxson Kudma concluded in fifth place in the softball throw and fifth place in the 50-meter dash.
Carly Smith, the Hurricanes head coach, summed up the experience at regional.
“The overall experience was incredibly impactful for our athletes, their families, the coaches and our community supporters. Special Olympics Illinois Region B put on a great event that celebrated all athletes and their unique and individual strengths. We had a blast participating in the event and are looking forward to the competition in June,” Smith said.
