Campanelli starts with hot shooting
HUNTLEY — The Dundee-Crown gymnasium may well be the “home away from home” for Anna Campanelli.
The Huntley senior scored 32 points, a new career high, in the Red Raiders’ 53-35 triumph over Boylan Catholic at D-C Nov. 22. The Red Raiders annually play two tournaments plus one Fox Valley Conference clash in Carpentersville.
Campanelli, a D-1 Kent State University commit, had 13 field goals, all two-pointers, and was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. She topped her previous best scoring game of 26 points. Campanelli had tallied 14 points in the season opening win over Hononegah and also versus Palatine in a 54-19 win in tourney play.
“A lot of them came in transition,” Campanelli said of the record setting game. “They were just in the flow.”
“Campanellli is a great two-way player for us, both on offense and defense,” HHS coach Steve Raethz said.
Senior Paula Strzelecki and junior Aubrina Adamik added seven points each for Huntley against the Boylan. Huntley scored in double digits all four quarters, from 11 in the first to 14 points in each of the following three stanzas.
“We have a young team this year with a lot of energy,” Campanelli said.
Huntley breezed by Palatine in the third game of the season, also at D-C. A whopping 11 Red Raiders contributed points, ending with a buzzer-beating trey by Madison Diaz. A 30-9 run over the first through third quarters settled this one. HHS totaled eight three-point baskets and one four-point play, fouled on a three-point basket, by Campanelli.
“We have a lot of players who can step up and contribute. We had a nice run in the second quarter getting baskets off our defense,” Raethz said.
Ava McFadden had two of the three-pointers for eight points, while Adamik and Strzelecki had six points each and Lana Hobday added five points including a three-pointer as did Mia Garlin.
