Huntley hopes solid win helps second half
HUNTLEY — Huntley boys basketball players walked out of Cary-Grove High School to the beat of their favorite music.
Huntley senior Sheldon Aninagyei Bonsu swished five 3-pointers in the second half of a Fox Valley Conference clash. He scored 21 points as the Red Raiders edged the Trojans 58-52 Jan. 24. The Red Raiders improved to 9-12 overall, 4-6 FVC.
A 26-points third quarter turned the tide as the Red Raiders went from being behind by five points to ahead by as many as 14.
“It was a weight off our shoulders,” head coach Collin Kalamatas said of the third quarter. “We were 0-for-17 in 3-pointers at Dundee-Crown Jan. 22, and Aninagyei Bonsu was 0-for-6. But we knew he was capable.”
Huntley senior Logan Darragh led the inside attack with 14 points as he received double team attention from C-G.
“He had a great game and also did a good job on their 6-7 guy, Adam Bauer,” Kalamatas said
Senior Christian Wilson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Huntley trailed 23-18 at halftime before their explosion on offense. Aninagyei Bonsu would foul out with 1:48 left, but three-for-four from the free-throw line kept the Trojans at arm’s length.
Senior Christian Wilson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
“This win should give us a lot of confidence to start the second round of the FVC,” Kalamatas said.
The Red Raiders are at Jacobs Jan. 31. They host Crystal Lake Central Feb. 4.
Recent FVC games were rough on the Huntley squad, with two overtime losses, the second 34-32 to Dundee-Crown Jan. 21. Wilson had 11 points and seven rebounds and Darragh also tallied 11 points with five rebounds. Aidan Larson added six points. It was tied 31-31 going into overtime.
Huntley fell to Pririe Ridge 43-42 on a buzzer beater Jan. 17.
Huntley ended a four-game losing streak as it picked up a non-conference win, with a 55-47 verdict over Naperville North Jan. 20 at Geneva. Wilson scored 16 points and has five rebounds game while Larson added 13 points and seven rebounds.
