"He was walking his bike along Route 62," Lanute said. "I offered to give him a ride home, but he declined since he was so close."

Lanute told the Bruce he would work on helping with his bike situation and the bicyclist was grateful for that.

The 5K event's route will be start at Coral Street, going north on Church Street; east on Algonquin Road; south on Haligus Road; west on Main Street back to the Huntley Town Square.

Students in a PLTW class had a chance to view engineering in action, while visiting an airplane hangar's operation at O'Hare International Airport.

"Danato Giuseffe, an HHS parent, is an American Airlines employee in Tech Ops and manages the hangars for AA at O'Hare," PLTW instructor Amanda Henk explained.

A third district school, Chesak Elementary School in Lake in the Hills, experienced a Hold in Place and Teach lockdown on March 15, the third such incident after two at neighbor Martin Elementary March 9 and 10. As in the instances at Martin, the Lake in the Hills police  thoroughly investigated the one-hour Chesak Hold in Place and Teach lockdown  and, "no threat to students or staff was present," according to press releases from the police and the school district.

Lions Club current Co-President Mary Meyer explained some of the main projects.

“We award three scholarships to Huntley High School seniors. Also, we collect clothing and household goods for homeless veterans, working with Paths to Hope of McHenry County and the Jesse Brown Center in Cook County.

"The Red Raiders return 11 players from last year's squad which was 31-5," Jakbowski said. "We will have an athletic group of players who will put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses.

The free Huntley Easter Egg Hunt  for ages 2 to 8 will take place at Deicke Park, located at 11419 S. Route 47 starting at 10 a.m. Saturday,  April 8. 

The first group will be children ages two and under at 10 a.m. at the Deicke Discovery Zone. 

Other age groups and their times are: 10:15 a.m. ages 2-3; 10:30 a.m., ages 4-5; 10:45 a.m., ages 6-8.

The Red Raiders achieved two events championships by Alex Johnson in the long jump and triple jumps. Sister Dominique Johnson's runner-up in the triple jump. The 4x200-meter relay squad was seventh and Ally Panzloff ended 10th the discus. All of the above led to a fifth-place team finish at the Class 3A IHSA State Meet. The contingent also won the Fox Valley Conference meet and their Class 3A Sectional Championship.

The incidents took place March 9 and 10. According to school officials, graffiti which indicated there was a weapon in the school was found at two different student restrooms. Police determined there was no threat to students or staff safety.

Pat Ullrich, Emergency Responses and Preparedness Manager for the police department and Philip Adams, public education and community outreach for Huntley Fire Protection District, gave presentations. They discussed understanding risk categories of various severe weather events, from marginal to high, according to NWS information.

Seniors Jessie Ozzauto and Sammi Campanelli and sophomore Anna Campanelli gained first-team All-FVC as voted by the league's head coaches.

Ozzauto, who reached 1,000 career points for the Red Raiders, also was honored by the Associated Press Honorable Mention All-State and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Honorable Mention All-State.

Sammi Campanelli was named IBCA Honorable Mention All-State. Ozzauto is committed to play at Leigh University in 2023-24 and Sammi Campanelli has selected Lewis University.

Andy Jakubowski has coached baseball at the prep and junior college level for two decades.

Meanwhile, wife Michelle directs the volleyball program at Barrington High School while Taryn played soccer in college and assists at Northern Illinois University. Daughter Taylor, a volleyball standout for HHS's 2019 squad, is a junior spiker at Seton Hall University. Jake is on the Heartland junior college team at Normal.

The seasonal maintenance will continue through March 31 at the cemetery, located at 11500 Dean Street, the east side, and 11503 Dean Street, the west side.

Matthew  Erickson is a fifth-grader who makes members of his team, family, fellow students and the community smile.

Thomas and “A View from Two Benches” author Doug Feldmann, an Algonquin native spoke about the book and Thomas’s career to the group at Huntley Public Library March 4.

Thomas told of the bright spots of his 10-year NFL career with the Bears, which included a field goal for an overtime win over the New York Giants the week before Christmas in 1977.
