“Our one doubles team of Ben Hein and Matt Grubbs are the 1 seed and should qualify,”  HHS coach Barry Wells said. “They have had an excellent year.”

Wells gave an update on other qualifying possibilities.

Heard threw a gem as she retired 17 Jacobs hitters via strikeout for a perfect game showing in a 4-0 win. It was her fourth perfect game this season and the Valparaiso University recruit has an ERA of 0.420.

Heard and fellow seniors outfielder Zoe Doherty, who will play at Cardinal Stritch next season; shortstop Reese Hunkins who will attend the University of Illinois and Lauren Ryan and their parents all were honored as the Fox Valley season closed out.

Michael Vitellaro seized the opportunity last season to be a relief pitcher then delivered the conclusion to the team;s latest Fox Valley Conference baseball championship May 13 in a 6-4 win. Two days earlier, former catcher Adam Guazzo fired a shutout against the Gators 1-0 in an eight-inning victory.

Guazzo is the team’s starting ace with a 7-0 record.

For one of the Class of 2022 girls lacrosse members, the post-season will not be the end of her lacrosse career, Kyleigh Higgins has selected Cathrage College in Kenosha.

“They’re looking at me to play midfield there,” Higgins said. “The Cathrage College coach, John Sung, is amazing in his knowledge,”

Higgins and other veteran team members got started in the sport mostly in middle school.

A change of position on the diamond helped Guazzo.

“I was a catcher before sophomore season but I had decided to try pitching,” he said.

It was a low-scoring contest for the Red Raiders’ 15th FVC win decided when Lucas Goldstein scored on a CLS error.

The wins gave the Red Raiders a 23-5 overall mark and a perfect 15-0 in FVC games with three league battles remaining. Huntley was 18-0 in winning the FVC in 2021.

HHS junior Katie Mitchell notched her 39th stolen base. Clara Hudgens was 2 for 3 with two runs scored; Madison Smith had a two RBI game; Jori Heard had one hit and an RBI in the 10-0 win.

The Red Raiders beat back the entire field for the sectional trophy win on a picture-perfect night. HHS finished with 130 team points, easily beating runner-up Prairie Ridge’s 78.5.

Hampshire, 11-1, May 5 and Dundee-Crown, 7-4, May 7, for a 12-2 league record.

Malachi Paplanus was the winning pitcher against Hampshire as he fanned 10 batters, walked one in a six-hit performance.

“We received an excellent pitching performance from Paplanus in the Hampshire game,” HHS coach Andy Jakubowski said. “Brayden Bakes and Joey Garlin set the tone for the offense with five hits combined and Ryan Quinlan hit a home run.”

Senior Jori Heard threw her fifth no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and two walks.

In an 11-2 win over Oswego at Marengo Saturday, Heard led the offense with four hits and four RBIs. Katie Mitchell was 3 for 5.

The Red Raiders were 10-3, 4-1 Fox Valley Conference following the non-league win.

“The senior group is the biggest senior group that we have had so far,” coach Joe Domka said. “The team camaraderie is something I have never seen in my last five years. The group of girls are the definition of a team sticking together through everything.”

The Red Raiders are the seventh seed and will host 10th seed Round Lake at 6:30 p.m. May 17. The winner will face the second-seed Lake Zurich and 16th seed Rockford Jefferson winner at 5 p.m. May 20 at HHS.

The sectional final is at 6 p.m. May 24 at Round Lake.

Huntley’s recent matches include a 1-0, double overtime win over Hampshire May 4.

HHS secured a 19-5 overall record, 13-0 FVC with a 4-0 win over Honnegah 4-0 on May 4 and a 10-0 FVC triumph at Cary-Grove May 5. The Red Raiders led second place McHenry, 8-3 league, with five FVC games left.

The Red Raiders shutout the NIC-9 leaders when Hononegah visited HHS. A three-run home run by junior Madison Smith provided a lead, Senior pitcher Jori Heard recorded 14 strikeouts.

“We had several great individual performances, especially at the freshmen-sophomore level which helped us to win that level and the combined championship,” HHS head coach Chris Maxedon said. “Talon Sargent was big for us as he was part of three winning events, the 100-meter run; the 200 and 4×400-meter relays and finished second in the 400-meter run.

The triumph, Huntley’s 16th this season, was not just a Fox Valley Conference win (11-0)because:

The victory was the 400th for head coach Mark Petryniec, who is in his 19th season leading the Red Raiders. His career mark was 400-233.

Senior Jori Heard pitched her third perfect game in a week. First, it was a 1-0 win over Lincoln Way East; then a 10-0 triumph over Crystal Lake Central and the win at PR.

Huntley starting pitchers Andrew Ressler and Malachai Paplanus held the Trojans in check. Ressler struck out 13 hitters in six innings of work while allowing two hits. Paplanus pitched five innings and chalked up five strikeouts in a three-hitter.

“Ressler pitched extremely well in game one as well as Paplanus in game two,” HHS head coach Andy Jakubowski said.

The Red Raiders recorded one win at the Prospect Invite  in Mount Prospect with a 4-2 verdict over South Elgin April 23.

“The South Elgin game was the best we have played all season,” HHS coach Matt Lewandowski said.

The offense was clicking to beat  the Storm as Maddie Cummings and Grace Helzer both had a goal and an assist.

Head coach Chris Maxedon summed up Huntley’s strengths.

“We will be looking to challenge the defending meet champion Burlington Central,” he said. “We are hoping to get healthy before the biggest part of our season. We have had some consistent performers for us all season; mainly seniors Evan Gronewold and Hayden Swim, but we have also gotten some solid performances of late from senior Charlie Kucz (800m), junior Jayden Bell (110 hurdles) and freshman Tommy Nitz (1600m and 3200m).

The Red Raiders notched a victory over Rockford Guilford and a three-set loss to Rockford Auburn. Huntley is the lone Fox Valley Conference school to offer boys volleyball. In the win, HHS won 25-21, 17-25 and won the battle 25-23.

“We were missing our best player and managed to find a way to win thanks to other guys stepping up,” HHS head coach Gerard Marchand said.

HHS coach Andy Jakubowski was pleased with how his team responded for a 14-2, 7-1 FVC mark.

“We challenged the hitters to do have a better two-strike approach,” the coach said. “I think six or seven of our hits were with two strikes,” Jakubowski said.

“We always come here for the caliber of the competition,” HHS coach Mark Petryniec said. “[Against St. Charles East] it came down to who executed the small ball better.”

A quartet of red-clad HHS hurlers combined for a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Lake Zurich April 16. Sophomore right-handed Malachi Paplanus got the start; senior left-handed Payton Barr was credited with the win and junior right-handed pitchers Parker Schuring and Derek Huber closed out the victory.

The four combined for 10 strikeouts and the defense made all the plays but the Bears had several on base.
