Huntley Police Chief Robert Porter was the guest Bingo caller to start the event. Bingo is offered the first Tuesday of the month at Huntley Park District’s cafeteria. This election day, “Coffee with a Cop” preceded the Bingo fun.

“We’re very strong on community outreach and they generate a lot of positive feedback,” Porter said. He was joined by Deputy Chief Amy Williams and Community Resource Officer Jerry Keepler.

Huntley police are partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts across the state, according to a Huntley Police Department press release.

Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and traffic safety enforcement zones throughout April.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes on the roads.

The Irie Cup, their new tea shop located on Main St. in Huntley, is a place where the couple hopes to share their knowledge and love for tea and herbal blends born out of their family roots.

Both Joe and LaShanda grew up in families of Jamaican heritage, where tea and herbs were woven into the fabric of everyday life.

According to a March 24 MCDH news release, fatal and nonfatal overdoses have remained at higher than normal levels since a March 13 alert from the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition.

The alert advised that local law enforcement had reported overdoses that required high quantities of naloxone, a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose and an increase in probable opioid related deaths between March 5 and 14.

“He was walking his bike along Route 62,” Lanute said. “I offered to give him a ride home, but he declined since he was so close.”

Lanute told the Bruce he would work on helping with his bike situation and the bicyclist was grateful for that.

The 5K event’s route will be start at Coral Street, going north on Church Street; east on Algonquin Road; south on Haligus Road; west on Main Street back to the Huntley Town Square.

Margaret Donahue is a legend in the Cubs front office history, as she was a club employee and executive from 1919 through 1958 seasons. As March is also Women’s History Month, Huntley Area Public Library patrons may read all about her pioneer days in Major League Baseball management at a local history display.

Students in a PLTW class had a chance to view engineering in action, while visiting an airplane hangar’s operation at O’Hare International Airport.

“Danato Giuseffe, an HHS parent, is an American Airlines employee in Tech Ops and manages the hangars for AA at O’Hare,” PLTW instructor Amanda Henk explained.

Lions Club current Co-President Mary Meyer explained some of the main projects.

“We award three scholarships to Huntley High School seniors. Also, we collect clothing and household goods for homeless veterans, working with Paths to Hope of McHenry County and the Jesse Brown Center in Cook County.

Pat Ullrich, Emergency Responses and Preparedness Manager for the police department and Philip Adams, public education and community outreach for Huntley Fire Protection District, gave presentations. They discussed understanding risk categories of various severe weather events, from marginal to high, according to NWS information.

The seasonal maintenance will continue through March 31 at the cemetery, located at 11500 Dean Street, the east side, and 11503 Dean Street, the west side.

“Decorations that remain in place after March 15 will be removed by the Village of Huntley,” the notice states. “Spring decorations may be placed on the grave sites starting April 1 and must conform to the Code of Ordinances or they will be removed.

The Firestarters Group LLC, doing business as The Irie Cup has requested a grant in the amount of $9,274.32 to off-set some of the leasehold improvements at the 11805 Main Street location for their new store. The grant request was reviewed at the February 23 Village Board meeting.

“In honor of Matthew,” the sign read as she held it up as a “Shavee” during the hair-clearing days, held March 3 and 4.

“I was nervous,” Slad said of having her head shaved. “But I have known Matt for three years; he’s a survivor.”

Matthew  Erickson is a fifth-grader who makes members of his team, family, fellow students and the community smile.

Thomas and “A View from Two Benches” author Doug Feldmann, an Algonquin native spoke about the book and Thomas’s career to the group at Huntley Public Library March 4.

Thomas told of the bright spots of his 10-year NFL career with the Bears, which included a field goal for an overtime win over the New York Giants the week before Christmas in 1977.

The HHS Jazz Combo performed while several Black owned businesses shared their products and stories. Historically significant art of important Black difference RAD in America were shown Feb. 24 at HHS.

“We started working on it at RAD three months ago with our student group,” RAD teacher co-leader Shaina Pocztowski said. Pocztowski brought her two children, Emerson, and Cooper, who wore their RAD wear.

All three departments will have teams in the SOILL Polar Plunge Saturday, March 4. The site is at Carpentersville’s Public Works facility, 1075 Tamarac Drive, from 10 a.m. to noon.

“We have participated in Polar Plunge for many years,” Algonquin Police Chief Dennis Walker said. “In addition to the Polar Plunge, they have raffles and games.

What happened next was anything but routine. His daughter and wife, Bianca and Adocia, helped save Spann’s life using CPR. (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

“She wasn’t nervous at all,” Spann said of the Oct. 4, 2021 incident. “My daughter Bianca  and my wife Adonica were so calm as when she called 911. As a military veteran, I had trained my wife and daughter in CPR and First Aide.”

The 5Essentials survey will be distributed to all parents-guardians students and teachers, according to the District 158 web site. The 5Essentials survey is a statewide effort by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to “gauge school climate and learning conditions in Illinois schools. The survey will be administered online by the University of Chicago Impact  and provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools.”
