Junior Georgia Watson committed to Division 1 University of Kentucky Wildcats. She will have a chance to reunite in college with teammate senior Morgan Jones, who will be at another Southeastern Conference school, the University of Missouri Tigers.

“I made the decision for Kentucky on Aug. 21,” Watson, a 6-foot, 2-inch outside hitter, said.

The Red Raiders defeated McHenry, 167-178 at McHenry Country Club Sept. 6. Nooa Hakala shot a 38 score and Tyler Lodewyck was next at 42, while Nathan Elm had a 43 and Sam Locascio contributed a 44.

“Nooa Hakala had a great round,” HHS boys head golf coach Collin Kalamatas said. “It's a tough course where you really need to be solid all the way through the (golf) bag and Hakala did just that.

“Saturday our goal was to make improvements from the county meet in terms of our team racing together,” Red Raiders head coach Matt Kaplan said. “Both boys and girls field of teams were some great competition. Our girls taking fourth overall was a great effort against some of the best teams in Illinois.

Tennis was not the first sport for the three daughters of Rita and Pleush Patel. Gymnastics got that nod before tennis took over.

“The Patel sisters are both doing great to start the season,” Red Raiders head Coach Barry Wells said. “Ari is successfully transitioning to doubles and Gia has been fantastic at No.

After a 1-1 tie for regulation against Elgin Larkin, the hosts won the penalty kick tiebreakers 4-2 on Sept. 2. The home team was 2-1 at the tournament, with the other win a 7-0 verdict over Woodstock North. HHS was 3-2-1 after its second straight home tournament crown.

Huntley trailed almost the entire way in regulation, until senior midfielder Anthony Aweve put home the game tying score with a little more than three minutes left.

“Coach (head coach Mike Naymola) told me in the first half I would get a chance in the second half,” Johnson said.

Johnson's historic kick happened after Haiden Janke scored his third touchdown on a four-yard run with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

The Red Raiders were 1-0-1 record as their season opener was a 1-1 draw with Boylan Catholic. Senior Hudson Nielsen scored the goal against Boylan.

“Boylan gave us a baseline to start with,” Lewandowski said. “It also gave us a look at how the new guys will fit in this year. We return 13 or 14 players from last year's roster.

Freshman Haley Rahman is the newcomer on the Huntley High girls team and completed the three-mile Emricson Park course in third place, with a time of 19:49.25. The girls won the team championship with 35 points.

Senior Zach Zuzzio ended fifth overall in 16:23.26, behind teammate and runner-up Tommy Nitz's 19:53.83.

Bower showed the coaches' faith in him was well earned as Huntley downed Crystal Lake Central in comeback fashion, 26-21, in the season opener Aug. 25. Bower scored the game-winning touchdown on a three-yard run with less than two minutes to play.

Senior Nooa Hakala competed in American Junior Golf Association events the week of Aug. 7-12 prior to reporting for HHS practices.

“He finished up just in time to remain eligible for IHSA play. Having him back in our lineup gives us serious depth and we saw that in our scores at Crystal Lake Country Club,” Huntley head coach Colin Kalamatas said.

The Red Raiders beat Crystal Lake South, 157-207, for the Fox Valley Conference dual match victory Aug.

The Red Raiders beat Lakes in non-conference action then defeated Crystal Lake Central and McHenry in Fox Valley Conference play. All matches were 2-0 wins. There was also one college selection.

Huntley senior setter Laura Boberg has selected University of Wiscinsin-Platteville for collegiate volleyball next season.

Boberg and fellow college commit outside hitter Morgan Jones (University of Missouri) as an outside hitter) believe the Red Raiders can accomplish big things this fall.

A week earlier, the public had a chance to watch all levels of HHS football teams at a scrimmage.

“Scrimmage night was great,” Red Raiders head coach Mike Naymola said. “We got a lot of players reps and more importantly we got out with no injuries.”

Some starting positions were still contested recently.

Seniors Zach Zuzzio, Luke Grubbs and junior Tommy Nitz attended a team building camp at Gunnison, Colorado.

“We got to run at 7,000 feet,” Grubbs said. “Last year the Buraks (Class of 2023 members Breanna and Brittany) went and introduced us to it.”

Some unusual summer conditions were present “There was ice in the rivers,” Grubbs said. The team concluded a preseason week of practice at the preseason team trials back at Deicke Park.

Lucas Gidelski, a sophomore, has been battling T-cell Lymphoblastic Cancer and is this year's Champions for Cures Champion.

“It was amazing, the support we have received from the community,” mom Kandice Gidelski said of the support Aug. 18. “Lucas was there in the stands with his sophomore football team buddies. He can watch from the sidelines this year if he wishes.”

Club 400 is located at Stewart McVicar's home and hosted a fundraiser to support Special Olympics of Illinois. An appearance by the Cubs World Series Champion 2016 Manager Joe Maddon was the highlight. Former Cubs players Jody Davis, Bob Dernier of the 1984 National League Eaat division winners and Ron Coomer and National Anthem singer Jon Vincent were also on the program.

Her high school career, though, had a different twist than most female golfers.

“I was the only girl on the boys' team at Crystal Lake South,” Allen said. “We started a girls' co-op team my senior year. It forced me to be more competitive and we made sectional our first year.”

Two decades plus later, Allen is leading the Red Raiders as she was named head girls golf coach after Anne Christensen retired.

The Red Raiders were Fox Valley Conference champions in both the regular season and post-season tournament. Wells is beginning his 18th season guiding Huntley girls tennis.

Top returning players for HHS include two state qualifiers who are sophomore Ella Doughty who earned runner-up at No. 1 singles and was a Class 2A state qualidier. Junior Kate Burkey, placed first in the FVC at first doubles and qualified for state with graduated Elaina Hibbeler.

Junior Taig Bhathal shot a score of 71 at Bridgestone Golf Club in Marengo Aug. 15 to become the first Red Raiders golfer to break par (72)since 2014. He edged Drew Scheenberg of Barrington by one shot for medalist honors. HHS finished with a team total of 321 strokes, to edge Mundelein's 321 score. Barrington won the three-team event with a total of 289.

“We both teach physical education, but can go through a day when we don't even see each other,” football head coach Mike Naymola said.

“Fall is a crazy time, but we get it both being head coaches,” volleyball head coach Karen Naymola said.

The Naymolas have three daughters, Abbigail is a sophomore while Elizabeth is a freshman and Kylie is in seventh grade.

Williams and Evtimov qualified for the United States Amateur Track and Field National Meet in Eugene, Oregon, held July 7-9 at historic Hayward Field. The HHS duo first qualified through a regional at the University of Illinois, after the Red Raiders won the IHSA Class 3A Girls State Track and Field Championship.

This Tuesday was expected to be hotter than most, but the regulars still came for their starts, and the 18-holes Men's Senior League as early as 7:30 a.m.

Betty Benson is the starter for the Sun City Men's Seniors golfers and has been since in that role since 2006.
