Village approves new ordinance to regulate and add restrictions to low-speed e-bikes, e-scooters, and low-speed gas bikes

HUNTLEY — In a move aimed at enhancing safety and aligning with state regulations, the Village of Huntley Board of Trustees approved a new ordinance to better regulate and add restrictions for the use of low-speed electric bicycles (including Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 types), low-speed gas bicycles, and low-speed electric scooters within its boundaries.

The decision, made at the Nov. 21 Village Board meeting, comes amid growing concerns over rider, motorist, and pedestrian safety and improper use of these increasingly popular modes of transportation.

Serpe enjoys playing defense for Scots

HUNTLEY — Like going for a steal in the open court, Cassidy Serpe didn't hesitate her answer.

“For me, it's always been about defense,” Serpe, a Huntley Class of 2024 alumna and now a McHenry County College Scot, said. “I would say for ever, since my junior year in high school. If there's a shot that's open, though, I'll take it.”

The Scots are off to a 5-1 start this season under the direction of new coach Kent Jones. MCC downed Joliet, 71-56 on Nov.

Campanelli starts with hot shooting

HUNTLEY — The Dundee-Crown gymnasium may well be the "home away from home" for Anna Campanelli.

The Huntley senior scored 32 points, a new career high, in the Red Raiders' 53-35 triumph over Boylan Catholic at D-C Nov. 22. The Red Raiders annually play two tournaments plus one Fox Valley Conference clash in Carpentersville.

Campanelli, a D-1 Kent State University commit, had 13 field goals, all two-pointers, and was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. She topped her previous best scoring game of 26 points.

Holding Close, Then Letting Go

The old adage says that if we love something, we should set it free.

That saying runs through my mind these days, as I take my high school daughter to tour prospective colleges. For one day, she tries each campus on like an outfit, checking to see if it’s the right fit.

She leaves our house as a child, but when we get to these campuses — with sprawling quads and stately architecture — she is transformed into an adult, or rather a small seedling of an adult.

Senior hoops standout starts season, inks letter

HUNTLEY — Huntley senior Anna Campanelli made her college selection choice of Kent State University official as she signed a letter of intent to attend the Kent, Ohio school and play basketball.

The signing day took place the same week as Huntley kicked off its 2024-25 season against Hononegah Nov. 19. Campanelli led the Red Raiders with 14 points in a 36-28 win over the Indians.

HHS head coach Steve Raethz summed up the effort Campanelli has shown the past three seasons.

Local firefighters win IAFF’s ‘Pink T-Shirt Contest’ blending breast cancer awareness with Hispanic Heritage Month

CARPENTERSVILLE — Recently the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) announced that Illinois Local 4790 located in Carpentersville is celebrating after its unique pink T-shirt design took first place in the IAFF’s annual “Best Pink T-Shirt Contest.”

According to the IAFF, this year, Local 4790 decided to get creative by blending two important causes—Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Hispanic Heritage Month—into one powerful design. The T-shirts feature “La Catrina,” also known as La Calavera Catrina, one of the most recognizable symbols of the Dia de los Muertos holiday.

The sucking makes all the difference

I blame the good people at Empire Flooring for sucking all the joy out of vacuuming.

To be clear, I found the Empire team all to be good people when they came to rip out the carpets in my house and replace them with laminate flooring. Those weary, well-weathered carpets were long overdue to be replaced, and just watching the Empire team pull them up made me want to call a hazmat team as a backup.

The laminate they expertly installed the same day is beautiful, and when they were finished it made me happy to stroll past all three de-carpeted rooms in my house and gaze in wonder at how much more inviting those rooms now look.

Volleyball squad takes 4th at state; 1st in Huntley’s hearts

HUNTLEY — 'Thanks for the memories'.

That was the motto that Huntley's volleyball team's backers said collectively following a season which netted a fourth place IHSA Class 3A finish, the first such achievement since 1997-98.

There were hundreds of big standout moments in a 32-10 campaign which started in August and ended at Illinois State University's CEFCU Arena in Normal. Lockport Township's 25-12, 25-21 win over the Red Raiders concluded the HHS season Nov. 16. This followed a 2-0 loss to Benet Academy in the state semifinals, 25-15, 25-19.

Dundee Crown High School theatre program hopes to raise enough funds to perform at the University of Illinois Theatre Festival

CARPENTERSVILLE — Each year the Illinois Theatre Association hosts an “Illinois High School Theatre Festival” at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. The festival brings thousands of students from across the state to attend a three-day event featuring theater-based workshops that help students strengthen their performing arts skills.

On Nov. 18, students from the Dundee Crown High School (DCHS) theatre program received the news that Illinois Theatre Association representatives witnessed their most recent production of the murder mystery comedy Deadline and wanted the cast of the school’s play to perform the show at the university’s Theatre Festival in January.

Key leaders back for boys bowling

HUNTLEY — Fresh from winning the initial Fox Valley Conference – Kishwaukee Valley Conference (KRC-FVC) championship, led by the new league's bowler of the year Matt Fishman, Huntley's boys bowling team is primed for more success.

The senior leaders returning this year are: Fishman, Joey Humphrey, Austin Tenglin, Noah Waters, Landen Conforti, Nick Gaspari who return to show the way for a contingent which was 13-1 in duals. Gaspari's claim to fame last season was rolling a perfect 300 game in a dual match.

Volleyball squad vets select colleges

HUNTLEY — Three Huntley volleyball senior players, of nine Class of 2025 members, had various impacts on this year's success.

Georgia Watson, Mari Rodriquez and Jocelyn Erling will continue their careers next year in college. They helped lead the Red Raiders to reach the IHSA State semifinals and the team returned with a fourth place trophy and a 32-10 final record.

Just before the team's departure to Illinois State University's CEFCU Arena, Watson and Rodriquez signed their letters of intent.

Watson selected to commit to the University of Kentucky, a D-1 Southeast Conference school.

Nitz finishes strong, gains all-state

HUNTLEY — Huntley senior Tommy Nitz completed his cross country career with back-to-back IHSA Cross Country State Meet all-state honors.

Nitz finished in 11th place at the Class 3A Boys State Meet with a time of 14:25.70, at Detweiller Park in Peoria Nov. 9. The time was a personal best and beat his pre-state meet goal of 14:30. Nitz had finished 21st last year, also an all-state honor.

HHS cross country head coach Matt Kaplan commented on Nitz's state meet performance.

Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office responds to nine election day complaints

ST. CHARLES — Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced that Kane County’s General Election Complaint Hotline received nine complaints during last Tuesday’s election day voting, according to a press release statement.

On Nov. 5, assistant state’s attorneys (ASAs) visited each polling place in the county to ensure compliance with the Illinois Election Code and to advise election judges of their availability to provide legal assistance as necessary, stated Mosser.

Of the nine complaints, almost half were related to electioneering activity, with the remainder comprising of a range of other concerns.

Village Board chooses to propose a 3.6% tax levy increase from 2023

HUNTLEY — At the Nov. 7 Village Board meeting, trustees were presented with three tax levy options to choose from that must be approved in sufficient time to file the approved property tax levy ordinance with the County Clerk’s Office by Dec. 31.

After having heard all three options, Board members agreed that Option Two would be the best option for the village considering it would absorb 66% or $125,300 of the new construction in Huntley.

While Option Two would represent a $188,817 or a 3.6% increase from 2023, it would still meet the village’s policy of keeping the tax rate low while meeting the village’s policy of funding the Police Pension.

Marlowe ceremony salutes all veterans

HUNTLEY — More than 100 area veterans stood as their names were read at the close of Marlowe Middle School's Veterans Day ceremony.

Students, school staff and veterans' family members gathered for breakfast and a Veterans Day salute, all said, in various ways, “Thank you, Veterans.”

“It's my favorite day of the school year,” Karey Miller, faculty advisor for Marlowe's Student Service Club, said. “The students ask a lot of great questions, and some have their grandparents or parents here. They learn how to meet veterans, shake their hands and thank them for their service.”

Volleyball squad prepares for state semifinal

HUNTLEY — For Huntley volleyball fans, the play which secured head coach Karen Naymola's first trip to the IHSA Class 4A State Semifinals will be remembered as the set and the kill for the ages.

Senior Georia Watson's 402nd kill of the season, following an assist from Rachel Hein, put the exclamation point on the Red Raiders' 25-22, 25-16 victory over Palatine Fremd for the DeKalb super-sectional championship Nov. 11. Huntley's state tournament semifinal is against Benet Academy, at about 7 p.m.

Post 673 ceremony praises veterans

HUNTLEY — Huntley American Legion Post 673, the Sons of American Legion Squadron and the Ladies Auxiliary all paid respects to all who have served in the Armed forces at a ceremony Nov. 9, ahead of the nationally recognized Nov. 11 Veterans Day.

"We may not know them all, but we owe them all," is one of the mottos which applies to the Saturday event.

American Legion Post 673 Commander Mike Stojak explained to a gathering that the Legion organized in 1920 after World War I ended.

Community donations help veterans

HUNTLEY — The Village of Huntley and the Huntley Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 673 hosted a collection drive Nov. 9 at Huntley Town Square. Red Raiders super spikers win sectional

HUNTLEY — For the sign-waving fans, they knew the Huntley volleyball team has been super all season.

Huntley with a 31-8 record, has a chance to show the rest of the state their talents as they won the McHenry sectional with a 25-16, 25-23 victory over Libertyville. The triumph advanced HHS to the Class 4A super-sectional at DeKalb. Huntley battled Palatine Fremd (33-6 record) Nov. 11.

Libertyville, 25-13, battled to the end but could not top Huntley's true grit Nov. 7.

Watson leads volleyball squad

HUNTLEY — A decision Georgia Watson made in middle school has been a key to Huntley's volleyball success.

Watson once played basketball, but decided to make volleyball her No. 1 sport and is now looking forward to playing volleyball at D-I University of Kentucky.

Watson's work reached a milestone when the Red Raiders beat Libertyville, 25-16, 25-23 for the McHenry Class 4A sectional title Npv. 7. HHS, 31-8, moved on to the Sweet 16. They battle Fremd (33-6) Nov. 11 at DeKalb for the right to compete at the IHSA Class 4A State Tournament.

Girls runners ready for state meet

HUNTLEY — The Huntley girls cross country team will have a chance to conclude their season against the best.

The girls team finished in fourth place, with 156 points and gained an IHSA Class 3A State Qualifying spot. The IHSA State girls cross country meets is Nov. 9 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Isabella Ciesla, a junior, finished 11th as she led the girls team with a time of 17:45.3 on the three-mile sectional course.

“The girls' goal at state is to finish in the top 10, which has been our goal since the beginning of the year,” Huntley coach Matt Kaplan said.

HHS moves on to sectional final

HUNTLEY — Post-season time is generally when, whatever the high school sport, the spotlight shines on the seniors.

Huntley's volleyball squad is no exception. The Red Raiders have nine Class of 2025 members, led by middle blocker Georgia Watson. The seniors will have a chance for a sectional title as the team emerged victorious, 25-14, 25-17 over Mundelein Nov. 5 at McHenry.

With the victory the Red Raiders, 30-8 overall record, advanced to the McHenry sectional final against Libertyville at 6 p.m.

Huntley Park District issues statement on community passing bond referendum request

HUNTLEY—As previously reported in My Huntley News, the Huntley Park District (HPD) announced that it was requesting an $18 million bond referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot in McHenry and Kane counties.

In a recent statement made by the park district, it was revealed that many residents who reside within its boundaries answered “yes” to the bond referendum request to raise revenue to improve, equip, and maintain parks and facilities including the renovation and addition of new amenities and playgrounds at several district parks.

Nitz set to leave mark at state

HUNTLEY — Huntley senior cross country runner Tommy Nitz knows the IHSA course at Detweiller Park in Peoria well.

He will compete there for the final time at the IHSA Class 3A State Cross Country Meet Nov. 9. He was the top boys' team finisher at the Lake Park sectional in fourth place, with a time of 14:46.5 and had all-sectional honors Nov. 2.

The boys were 11th in team standings, with 306 points. After Nitz, junior Andrew Raistrick was next, 15:58.5, 53rd; junior Logan Barreto, 79th, 16:21.1 and frosh Mark Omoniyi, had a 16:30.5 clocking, 92nd.
